The most significant event in Oahu's history
occurred on December 7, 1941, the ''day that will live in infamy.'' That
morning, a Japanese force of more than 400 airplanes attacked the U.S.
naval base in Pearl Harbor, killing 2,400 people and kick-starting
America's entrance into World War II. In addition to the human lives
lost, dozens of ships and airplanes were destroyed.
Among the first casualties of the attack was the battleship USS Arizona;
many of the 1,177 crewmen went down with the ship, and remain there
today. Few things in life or more sobering and moving than a visit to
the USS Arizona Memorial, which is an experience no American should ever
miss.
On the way to Pearl Harbor your friendly tour guide will provide a live
historical narration about the first attack on the United States. After
visiting the Memorial you will have an opportunity to browse through the
fascinating Arizona Memorial WWII Museum exhibits and gift shop where
you can find WWII books, souvenirs, and memorabilia.
